chelsea flower show garden
Working with Leeds City Council and UK Skills, these four show gardens were created at Chelsea to publicise the work of both of these organisations, winning medals on each occasion.
This house was separated from the garden and surrounding landscapes by a large sloping tarmac car park. The drive led to a garage that did not allow the parking of the client's cars due to poor accessibility. The garden was on a north slope exposed to strong, cold winds.
The design brief for this garden was to provide a new garage with parking for two large cars, an outside seating area close to the house and a summerhouse and courtyard garden with herbs.
A house isolated in a sea of tarmac, views from the house hidden by conifers and a lack of planting interest and colour. The clients wanted colour, practical solutions to their parking problems and to link their house with the landscape.
Project management involved working with a team of up to 16 contractors to build a new garage, driveway and summerhouse whilst remodelling the garden with extensive earthworks and large swathes of planting.
Within six months the garden began to settle well and the plants flourished. This was due to thorough ground preparation, mulching and selecting good quality plants that were right for the site conditions.
